In consideration of the engagements entered into by the Company under this Agreement, and of the fulfilment thereof, the Egyptian Government undertake to protect the Company against competition to the extent following, that is to say:-they will not themselves lay nor grant any concession or authority for laying any new submarine cables connected with Egypt (whether in competition with the cables of the Company or not), unless such new cables shall be found necessary in the public interest of Egypt or Great Britain or in the general interests of International Telegraphic Communication: PROVIDED ALWAYS that if it shall be decided that new cables are to be laid, the Company shall have a preferential right to the contract or concession for laying the same.

Article 8. The Egyptian Government shall have the option at any time of cancelling all the foregoing Articles of this Agreement, on giving the Company twelve months previous notice, and on payment to them of the sum of £150,000, being the estimated cost of laying a submarine cable between Suez and Suakin, together with such additional sum for interest thereon, not exceeding in the whole £50,000, as Her Majesty's Government may determine. The Egyptian Government will exercise their rights under this Article whenever called upon to do so by Her Majesty's Government.

Article 9. Immediately on the payment of the amount provided in the last preceding Article, the submarine telegraphic line between Suez and Suakin shall become the property of the Egyptian Government.
